Adopting a child can be a life changing yet immensely rewarding journey. For all the joys that will come with having an adopted child, there will also be some difficulties ahead.

Your decision to adopt is not something that you should take lightly, you will want to be sure that it is the right decision for you and your family.

For example, Is it your hope that by adopting a child it will save your marriage or help you to fit in better with your friends who have kids? Or would you be totally committed to parenting no matter how it will change your life in the future?

Are you going to be able to deal with the idea that you are not biologically related to your adopted child? Could it have an impact on your relationship with them? What if you later, unexpectedly have a child of your own, will you still have the same feelings towards your adopted child?

Could you handle the process of adoption? Between the home study and the waiting the process can be quite daunting. There are a number of issues that may arise that could affect your chances of adopting. Have you done your research regarding types of child adoption, adoption options, agencies, lawyers and adoption costs?

What if you are not able to adopt an infant? What if the child is from another culture or country? Do you know anyone who was adopted, have you spoken to adoptive parents?

Have you researched special needs or transracial adoption? Could you make some lifestyle changes for a transracial adoption in order to help them feel more comfortable and build self-esteem?

Is it important to you to parent an adoptive child? Have you always wanted to adopt or are you only recently considering the idea of adopting a child?

Find the answers to these questions within yourself and then surround yourself with people who support your efforts and when you find the right child to adopt you will naturally be able to help him or her become a part of your family.
