In the end, the final decision falls back on you and your partner anyway. So discussing adoption with your partner in detail is extremely important if you have any intentions of adopting a child because you two who will have to adjust to the presence of a new child. A lot of responsibility comes with being a parent or with growing your existing family. You will need to discuss what you could offer a child, for example a home and love. Could they deal with the fact that the child is not biologically related to them? Can you provide for the child financially? There are many other questions to consider as well. Discussing adoption with your partner is even more important if you are considering an interracial adoption. When you are adopting a child of a different race it can be quite a sensitive issue and both you and your partner should be able to accept all the concerns involved. For example, it is one thing to adopt a child; it is another to adopt a child that may be considered different by society. If you are living in a bigger city, people of a different race is pretty acceptable, but try it in a small town. Boy, do people notice and believe it or not there is still a lot of discrimination.
1. Have an open mind and try to understand what your partner has to say. Be ready to witness an outpouring of emotions, as the subject matter of the discussion is very tricky. 2. Be prepared for the rejection of your proposal. You can't expect your partner to just agree with you right then and there. Your partner might not be ready for adoption and it's not a good idea to force the subject. Hopefully in time, your partner might become ready to adopt a child. You just need to wait for the idea to become mutual. Years ago, when I first wanted to adopt a child, my husband would have no part of it; he wanted to have our own biological child. After some time and when all of our other options had failed miserably, he was then more than willing to consider adopting. 3. Don't be afraid to ask what your partner's concerns are regarding adopting a child. You might be surprised at how simple the concerns are and how easy it is to address them. Telling your partner about adoption should be straightforward and simple. With a good discussion it will be easy for you to consider your options and figure out which is best for you both.
