Adoption Baby Showers

Adopting a child is nothing short of a miracle, and having adoption baby showers are a special way to celebrate the arrival of a new baby or child into a loved one’s life. Adoptive mothers and fathers need and deserve just as much love and support as birth parents.

Adoption showers should be treated just the same as if the child was a natural child of the parents. Games can still be played and advice given to the new parents.

The only difference is how the parents got their new bundle of joy. Given that it is an adoption, every effort should be made to not differentiate a child through adoption versus natural means.

If you are questioning whether a baby shower for an adoption is appropriate or not, my answer would be yes, absolutely!

Some other concerns that need to be addressed regarding adoption baby showers are:

When Should You Have the Shower?

The timing of adoption baby showers should really be up to the parents. Having the baby shower after the child arrives home is so much more perferable.

There could possibly be delays in the adoption process or the adoption could end up falling through. The parents are going to be quite tramatized as it is without having to look at shower gifts that everyone was so thoughtful to give.

Allow the adoptive parents a few weeks with their new child before you have a baby shower. To prevent upset or just in case they object to even having a shower, it would be best to talk with them first.

Plus, everyone is going to want to get a glimpse of your new bundle of joy.

Adoption Baby Shower Invitations

When you're sending baby shower invitations for this type of celebration, you might want to include information about the adoption. Change the wording to reflect the difference so it's clear to people that you are not trying to be misleading.

For example, instead of just having the birth date or age of the baby/child you might also include the adoption date, this way the guests can buy age appropriate clothes or gifts. If the child is coming from overseas, you can also list the home country of the child to ensure that there will be no questions about the child's nationality.

It would be most appropriate to send the baby shower invitations out after the child is with the parents and at least 3 weeks before the shower.
