Adoption Costs

You are considering adoption. You want to know what adoption costs are involved, and if the costs can vary depending upon circumstances, such as the state you live in and what age you are when you adopt.

Adopting a child could involve an adoption cost of anywhere from $0 to $40,000, depending on a variety of circumstances, according to online experts. For example, a foster care adoption could cost you anywhere from $0 to $2,500, a licensed private agency adoption anywhere from $5,000 to $40,000 or more.

An independent adoption anywhere from $8,000 to $40,000, an unlicensed adoption anywhere from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, and an international adoption anywhere from $7,000 to $30,000. Other adoption program country fees can vary from $7,500 in some countries, such as Thailand, to $12,250 in Korea.

Is There a Difference in Cost According to Age of the Child?

The cost of adoption may also vary depending on the age of the child. For example, to adopt a healthy infant, the total cost amount will be from $0 to $60,000.00 possibly higher. However, the total cost of an international child adoption may be a few thousand to $40,000.

Why Does it Cost so Much?

Site Build It!

There are a lot of reasons why adoption costs can vary so much, and why adoption is so expensive. For instance, an international adoption is more expensive in part because of transportation, legal, and medical costs. On the other hand, such an adoption can be quicker than a domestic adoption.

Experts say adoption is so expensive because of the many services involved in adoption, including counseling the parents-to-be, an evaluation of their home, supervision once a child has been adopted, housing and transportation costs, and many others.

Adoption costs can also be different from state to state, because there are different requirements in each state, and the operational expenses for offices in each state involved in adoption can vary as well.

Is There a Less Expensive Way of Adoption?

Yes, an adoption through the foster care system can be free or a modest fee be requird because such adoptions are done through state or federal agencies, and federal and state subsidies are often available to the parents interested in adopting. (A federal tax credit of up to $10,600 for qualifying families may be available for all types of adoption.)

A child adopted through the foster care system has often been abused in his life at home and typically may be grade school age through to teenager. The costs for an adoption through a licensed agency and through an unlicensed agency can be similar, but an unlicensed agency does not face the same regulations that a licensed one does. An independent adoption involves the natural parents giving their child up for adoption and their use of an attorney.

If you are thinking of adopting, be sure to do some research on the types and options of adoption. In addition many State websites have pictures of waiting children.
