Some Great Ideas & Tips
for Adoption Fundraising

For many people who adopt a child you will discover that the adoption process is a bit of a financial challenge, to say the least. Sometimes with all your savings and loans, it just does not add up to enough to cover all your adoption costs.

There are alternatives of course. You could ask for some financial help from your friends and family or you could consider adoption fundraising.

Depending on the option of adoption you choose (public, private, independent, foster care), will depend on how much it will cost you. But regardless, it will cost you something.

For example, if you already have children and want to adopt another, say through public adoption. Then you will pay very little. Private adoption will, on the other hand, be another story.

When we decided to adopt, we wanted to adopt through foster care. This was not going to cost us anything except our love and home. And we already had both, however, we did not have other children, so we had to purchase so much.

We had to buy a crib, highchair, bed, bedding, stroller, car seats, indoor and outdoor toys, clothes, health care products, baby food, extra food, a new car because the one we had was not a family car and the car seats would not fit properly. Anyway, you get the picture.

So, if you are in a position where you need to raise money so that you can adopt your child, here are some ideas that I hope will assist you in improving your adoption budget:

Write a Letter of Request

Write a letter to friends and family letting them know of your intentions to adopt. It’s a good idea to include pictures of the child you plan to adopt, if you have chosen one already.

Just ask them straight out for help, this will be especially easy if you are close to them. Explain to them how important it is to you to adopt and how they can help if possible.

If you do not want to appear too forward in asking for their help, then casually mention that you are building an adoption fund. Hopefully they will catch your drift and help out financially or by promoting other adoption fundraising efforts.

Garage Sales

Of course, the good old, yet reliable garage sales. Look in your basement and attic for anything that you no longer need. Friends, family and even neighbors may be willing to contribute some of the items they are no longer using.

You could also sell drinks and other baked goodies.

Be sure that when you advertise your garage sale you include your reason for having it. Most people are more than willing to support you, and even if they don’t happen to find something that they want to buy, they just might donate a few dollars to your cause.

Community Dinner

An adoption fundraising dinner may go over well in your community or church and you shouldn’t have to serve filet mignon or caviar in order to attract people to the dinner.

Simply telling them why you are holding the fundraising event and why you want to adopt a child will suffice. You could serve anything from spaghetti, to fried chicken and baked potatoes and then have cookies and squares for dessert.

A couple of other adoption fundraising ideas would be to have a car wash or a bingo event. These are just a few suggestions of what you could do. You will just have to be creative. Thus, you may need to hold several fundraising activities before you will raise enough money to adopt a child.
