This simply holds true because the adoption will have a significant impact on a child's life. Remember, you are adopting a child, not a pet who you take home the same day. So a no-wait period would be somewhat suspicious. The Agency Asks for Outrageous Upfront Fees Because private adoption agencies are funded privately and operate for profit, unlike a public adoption agency, it is understandable that they may ask for fees upfront, right. Right, but what is not understandable or even acceptable for that matter is when they ask too much for an upfront fee. If you are being confronted with a similar situation, it may be best to look for another agency because you're dangerously near to yet another adoption scam. The Agency is Not Willing to Disclose ANY Information at all If the private adoption agency is not willing to disclose ANY information at all about their procedures and about your prospective adoptive child, it is possible that they are concealing nonexistent facts and they're an illegitimate company in disguise. Adoption is a sensitive decision so an agency should be more than willing to address your concerns. Wrongful Child Adoption Scams Always double check any records presented to you regarding the profile of your adoptive child. In cases of wrongful adoption, an adoption agency will deliberately deceive you regarding certain characteristics of your adoptive child's traits or conditions that might not make him ideal anymore in your eyes. You still get the child in the end, but he is not what or who you thought he was and this could be quite an emotional tragedy for both of you. The Agency Does Not Make Sure All Contracts Are Signed You will probably find yourself in somewhat of an uncomfortable situation if the birthparents of your adopted child are alive and demanding to have contact with you as an adoptive parent. It is also possible that the birth parents may blackmail you in the future and extort money. This can be prevented from happening if you have your lawyer present a contract that stipulates what your preferences are regarding the relationship between you and the birth parents. Whatever you do, do not just hand over money without a contract. Then do not sign the contract without reading the terms and conditions very carefully. Also have your lawyer explain each and every step to be sure that you understand completely what you are getting into. The Agency Asks for Nothing from You in Exchange for a Price When an adoption agency allows you to adopt a child without submitting any requirements and in exchange for a price, chances are the child was obtained by illegal means. Although it doesn't make you privy to the crimes they've committed, you will likely loss custody of the adopted child if the truth does come out. Doing business with a private adoption agency can be quite risky, even if it does allow for more privacy and convenience than public adoption agencies. So do take care with each step you take, focus not only on adopting a child for the right reasons but also through the right means!
