Adoption Travel Requirements

Adoption travel overseas is high on the list of many people considering adopting a child today. This is because the availability of infants and children for adoption in developed countries is significantly declining.

For example, in the United States there are about 20,000 citizens and couples who adopt children internationally each year.

Global figures indicate that about 75% of infants and children adopted in developed countries come from countries like, South Korea, Russia, Ukraine, China and Guatemala. Among these countries, different adoption requirements have to be processed.

Child Adoption Travel: Is it really necessary?

Requirements of an adoption travel overseas include three different types of travel, 1) pre-adoption travel, 2) actual adoption trips and 3) heritage trips.

The following include some guidelines that will help to explain why these types of travel are imperative to the adoption process.

    Pre-adoption Travel

With overseas adoptions it is necessary to travel prior to or while processing the adoption transaction.

You will have to absorb all that you can about the culture of the country in which your adopted child is coming from. Read travel books, research the Internet and any other resources you can find about this country and its culture.

By doing this you will get a feel for how you can more responsibly raise the child. Thus, when the child asks questions about the country they are from in the future, you will be able to readily offer a good answer.

    Adoption Trips

In most cases, adoption agencies will require you to personally travel to the country to complete the adoption. You will be asked to fill out a lot of papers, so beforehand, make sure your travel documents are well taken care of. This will help you save time and effort.

If you are adopting from South Korea (only), you could choose to arrange for a setup wherein the child would be escorted by authorities to your country.

    Heritage Trips

Since you are adopting a child from overseas, you really should include a visit to your adopted child's home country in the future, it will help to give them a sense of their own cultural identity. For this type of trip, be sure to plan the destinations and specific tourist places you will visit. Visiting other areas of the country will also be helpful.
