African Adoptions

African Flag African adoptions are far less common than countries such as China, Russia and Guatemala.

When deciding which country to adopt from it is a personal journey in which each family must make their own final choice.

There are orphans who need families throughout the world. But it may be argued that none so much as those in Africa.

Due to war, disease, poverty and terrible economic conditions, even those children lucky enough to find a place in an orphanage have no real hope for any kind of future.

The adoption process for African adoptions is just about the same as an international adoption in any country. There is a lengthy preparation on the receiving country side for the homestudy, background checks, health exams, fingerprinting, et al (America, Canada, UK, etc), then a long wait for the process on the African country side.

It is important to be educated and prepared when going into an adoption from Africa as there are many challenges involved, especially if the adoptive parents are not using an established adoption agency.

The most common roadblock for many adoptive parents is the “residency requirements.” Many African countries such as Kenya, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Lesotho require that you take up residency from up to three to six months. Some of these countries may waive this requirement, but if this law is in writing, the adoptive parent can be forced to abide by it at any time.
