Bulgaria Adoptions

Bulgarian Flag Until 2008, Bulgaria adoptions were at a halt, but with the new Minister of Justice and the latest changes in the Ministry of Justice office (MOJ), progress is being made.

Bulgaria is a beautiful country located on the Balkan Peninsula, on the west coast of the Black Sea, north of Greece, south of Romania, and east of Serbia and Macedonia. It has a population f 7.6 million and is approximately the size of Iowa.

Children come into care because of poverty, unplanned pregnancy or overwhelmed parents. Children living orphanages are grouped based on their age and health; children with physical or mental handicaps are placed in special orphanages called Homes.

Children Available:

The children available for adoption in Bulgaria are usually 18 months and up. Children are generally healthy and are of Roma (gypsy), turkish, and caucasian descent. More boys are available than girls. Special needs children are also available.

Requirements:

Those who may apply are married couples and single women over 25. There should be no more than 45 years between the age of the child and the parent. If you already have more than 2 children you are asked to adopt a child who is 3 or older.

Adoption between the United States and Bulgaria is governed by the Hague Adoption Convention. Therefore to adopt from Bulgaria, you must first be found eligible to adopt by the U.S. Government.

Bulgaria Adoptions Process:

Complete and submit a dossier to the Bulgarian authorities. A child will be referred to you by the Ministry of Justice in Bulgaria. Once you have accepted your referral, you can then make your first trip to visit your new child.

Travel:

Shortly after your referral, you will make your first trip which will consist of a 5-7 day visit with your new child. A second trip will be required to complete the adoption and take your new child home.

Approximate Costs:

Up to as much as 26,000. After adoption tax credit it may only cost you as much as 14,000.

Timeline:

The longest wait is (9 months - 2 years) for a child under three. Adoptive parents requesting a child over 3 can expect a much shorter wait (5 - 9 months).

If you are interested in further and more up to date information on Bulgaria Adoptions go to the Tree of Life Center Program.

I am not by any means referring this program as I am not familiar with them, however, they do provide some very useful and up to date information.
