What is Domestic Adoption?
A domestic adoption is when a child is placed for adoption within the same country in which they were born. This may be achieved through a private agency or the state, such as foster care. Once you have considered the type of adoption you will then need to look at its option. For example, would you consider a private or public domestic adoption. There are of course pros and cons to both and every state has it’s own rules and regulations, but here are some that are pretty much common everywhere. Domestic Private Adoption Advantages* You can adopt newborns or infants easier. * The whole process can usually be completed faster. * You can choose the natural parents ( no drugs, racial, etc). Disadvantage * It’s expensive; some private agencies can be somewhat unscrupulous. If you choose to go the route of a private agency, be sure to do your research. Take just as much care as you would in picking a pediatrician or OB/GYN for a delivery. Domestic Public Adoption or Foster Care Advantages * It is inexpensive. * You are helping kids in need. Disadvantages * If you adopt from the state, and unless you are in a large metropolitan area, it is difficult to get a newborn. * Many of these children are victims of abuse and neglect. Some may have learning problems and alcohol/drug exposure from when their mother was pregnant. However, you can get a healthy child. If you choose to foster to adopt, unless you have a say as to whether you will only take children who are guaranteed to go up for adoption then be forewarned that it can be very hurtful when these kids do have to go back home. Don’t forget though that you are doing a magnificently, wonderful and special service by taking care of these children while their parents get it together. ________________________________________________
