An Introduction
to Transracial Adoption

Transracial adoption is basically the process of matching children belonging to a particular race or ethnic background with parents who belong to another group or race.

This may also refer to the process of adopting children from another continent, popularized by Angelina Jolie. However, adopting children of a different race within the US or Canada is also done.

There are several reasons why people choose transracial adoption over conventional adoption. Because there is such a great demand for Caucasian children, adoption agencies often find it difficult to match applicants with white children.

It is then easier to adopt a child of color and this is what many applicants will do if they feel that they may find any difficulty in adopting a child. Some people are adopting children from different races just because they want to take care of them, especially those children who are least likely to get adopted.

Expert Opinions

Adoption experts have different opinions about this kind of adoption. Some adoption experts feel that children and parents of the same race should be matched together.

Others believe that it is only necessary to have one parent be of the same race as the child, and finally some experts think that race really shouldn't be considered at all when adopting children since the primary reason for adoption is to provide the child with a good home and loving family.

Personally, I would have to agree with the third scenario, since our girls are both of different ethnic backgrounds and my husband and I are Caucasian. Before adopting the girls, we discussed this with our case worker.

We agreed that it was important to communicate with the girls about their cultures, we expose them to experiences involving their culture, and teach them their cultures history as well as celebrate all other cultures.

A parent must carefully consider the following when preparing for transracial adoption:

    1. Your beliefs regarding ethnicity and race, obviously a racist would not be fit to undergo this type of adoption. Ask yourself if you have an open mind about ethnicity and race. Additionally, you should be ready to accept that the family you are building will indeed be different.

    2. The environment and your lifestyle should be conducive to raise a child of a different race. The adopted child is entering into a new life, that of his new adoptive parents. The lifestyle of the parent should be appropriate to raise a child, especially one with color.

    3. It is always good, if you can afford to raise more than one child, to adopt siblings as well, if there are any. Adopting siblings is a good idea because having somebody related can add security for the child. This may be especially true in transracial cases, as the child will be able to grow up with someone whom they can easily relate to.

Transracial adoption is one form of adoption that is becoming relatively more common. People consider it to be a noble act and it enables orphaned or abandoned children of color to have parents and families.
