What I Got....

by Michelle
(Fresno, CA)

What I Got…..

I didn’t get to feel you move or hear your heartbeat
I didn’t get to kiss your little forehead, hands or feet
I didn’t get to lay upon that table in great pain
I didn’t get to sign the papers or even pick your name
I didn’t get to bottle feed or give you your first bath
I didn’t get to see your first step or hear your lil laugh.

But what I got when you were ten made up for it all
I got to see you ride your skateboard and helped you when you’d fall
I got to see you sing the 50 states in Mrs. Johnson’s class
I got to see you run and play with Niko through the grass
I got to see how well you drew on paper, walls and more
I got to see your big blue eyes when you’d walk on through the door.

Now I get to watch as you make me proud to be
The mother who has always known we were meant to be
I get to watch you read and pray and smile so freely
I get to watch you as you become the man you’ve longed to be
I get to watch you build your strength in more ways than one
I get to watch you walk with God and see the wonders He has done
But what I get the most of all aren’t memories from the past
But a love so deep within my soul that will forever and ever last!

I love you son!
